A Journey to the Heart of Capim Dourado

One of the absolute highlights of our summer adventure through Brazil was visiting Mumbuca, the birthplace of the world-famous Capim Dourado.

Hidden away in the breathtaking landscapes of Jalapão, this small village is where a centuries-old craft continues to thrive. Walking through Mumbuca felt like stepping into another world—one where tradition, nature and craftsmanship come together in the most beautiful way.

We had the privilege of visiting one of the local workshops, where artisans welcomed us and shared the story behind their remarkable creations. Watching skilled hands transform delicate golden strands into intricate jewellery, baskets and decorative pieces was nothing short of inspiring.

But what exactly is Capim Dourado?

Translated as "Golden Grass," Capim Dourado (Syngonanthus nitens) is a rare, naturally shimmering grass that grows almost exclusively in the Jalapão region of Brazil. Unlike metal, its golden colour isn't painted or treated—it is entirely natural. As the grass matures and dries, it develops its distinctive golden shine, making every piece look as if it were crafted from fine gold.

The harvesting of Capim Dourado is carefully regulated to protect this extraordinary natural resource. It can only be collected during a specific season, after the seeds have matured and fallen back into the soil, ensuring the grass continues to grow for future generations. This sustainable tradition has been passed down through generations and remains an important source of income for the local communities.

Each handcrafted piece tells a story of patience, heritage and respect for nature. No two creations are exactly alike, making every item truly unique.

Of course, we couldn't leave Mumbuca empty-handed.

We carefully selected a beautiful collection of authentic Capim Dourado jewellery and accessories, all handmade by the local artisans and labelled with 'handmade in Brasil'. We are incredibly proud to bring these unique treasures all the way from Brazil to Belgium, so our Madif ladies can enjoy a little piece of this magical place.
